At the end of March, our CEO Marshall Moutenot and team attended CEATI’s 2024 International Hydropower Conference, where attendees from around the world came together to discuss everything from retrofitting dams and modernizing plant operations to technological opportunities in the world of hydropower.
But as anyone who works in water knows, water not only moves but how we’ve come to expect its movement throughout our planet is changing right alongside our climate. What to do?
Some point to technology and AI as the solution. But not generative AI, not the bad news AI, not even the old AI, no. The narrow AI. Wait – what? Exactly!
Our CEO Marshall Moutenot presented 'Promise and Pitfalls of AI' at CEATI this year, seeking to demystify all things AI and ultimately offer a framework or two for assessing this potential solution. Marshall starts with a quick history on both AI and its promises throughout the decades, not just recently. He then uncovers common misconceptions and pitfalls on the type of AI we hear of the most these days: broad, or generative AI, and eventually hones in on the main contention of the presentation: how narrow AI, a type of AI that’s worked well for years (spam filter anyone?) can work quite well for specific tasks like modernizing hydropower operations.
With ease, finesse, and humor, Marshall re-recorded a version of his presentation at CEATI for all to see and learn async. Check out the video below, and get in touch with us if you have thoughts to share! Happy constructively-considering-AI watching!
PS: in case you're here and don't already know, HydroForecast is already one solution doing the kind of work AI is great at.
