We’re excited to announce that Google DeepMind’s WeatherNext Graph forecasts are now available in HydroForecast as an experimental 🧪 data source to view alongside short-term forecasts. This update gives customers access to one of the most cutting-edge AI weather models available today.
Weather forecasts are an important data input for training our model to produce accurate streamflow forecasts. HydroForecast uses the best-available data inputs to power our model, including global meteorological data, satellite surface observations, and local in situ measurements.
WeatherNext Graph is an AI-driven global weather forecasting model designed to outperform traditional forecasts in both speed and accuracy, especially when it comes to predicting extreme weather events. With a 10-day lead time and 6-hour temporal resolution, it provides rich context for short-term streamflow forecasts.
Adding WeatherNext Graph data to HydroForecast gives customers a powerful way to compare HydroForecast’s streamflow predictions and model inputs side-by-side with WeatherNext’s weather forecasts. With this information readily available, users are empowered to easily see how AI-powered weather data compares to other weather sources, which impact streamflow.
While WeatherNext data isn’t yet a model input driving HydroForecast’s forecasts, this addition means that our customers can build confidence alongside our team as we evaluate its performance and impact on forecast accuracy. Customers can explore WeatherNext Graph forecasts directly in the HydroForecast dashboard and access the data via our API.
We’re committed to continuous improvements for our customers, which means staying ahead of the curve by integrating cutting-edge technologies that enhance our forecasts. New experimental sources like WeatherNext Graph provide access to new forecasts and insights today while paving the way for future model improvements. This work reflects our ongoing dedication to providing customers with the best tools to manage uncertainty.
We look forward to seeing how this new experimental source empowers our customers to make even better decisions.
