As we kick off a new year, we can’t help but reflect on all the exciting progress and milestones of 2024. We’ve gathered feedback from the incredible organizations we work with on ways to improve remote monitoring, and we put many of those ideas into action in Lens. We’re excited to share these highlights from 2024 and a sneak preview of what’s to come in 2025!
It was a big year for remote monitoring. Over 1,300 users monitored more than 141 million acres in Lens – that’s an area larger than California! Folks were busy, ordering over 4 million acres of commercial imagery and creating over 23,000 notes. We’re excited to say that 97% of properties in Lens had commercial imagery coverage last year, and we expect coverage to be even better in 2025 with new partnerships on the horizon.
We love developing new features to support your monitoring, and we’re proud that some of our most-loved improvements have come directly from customer suggestions. Here are some of our most impactful updates from 2024:
Lens Lookout: Launched our automated change detection feature which helps users identify timely changes based on custom criteria, reducing monitoring burden.
Enhanced note features: Added customizable tags, sorting, filtering, and polygon downloads to streamline observation tracking and organization.
Saved reports: Introduced saved reports to enhance monitoring and collaboration over time, and added the AI-powered Smart Summaries feature to help users save even more time.
Onboarding improvements: Enhanced the onboarding flow to guide new users step-by-step through the main features, helping new team members get up to speed more quickly.
Single Sign-On support: Simplified access for enterprise customers, meeting IT and security needs.
Design Improvements: Upgraded interactions and pages, including the Reports pane, Lens Library, and note cards, for a smoother user experience.
On top of releasing new features and updating design, we worked diligently to bring you even more datasets to support your remote monitoring. Throughout the year we added over twenty new datasets for forest carbon monitoring, global biodiversity, hydrology, infrastructure, and more.
We launched a new partnership with Chloris Geospatial to provide our users with access to Chloris’ 30m and 10m carbon datasets, which include measures of carbon stock, carbon stock change, and forest cover.
We also added the highly anticipated Planet 3m Forest Carbon Monitoring data. This dataset includes aboveground carbon, canopy cover, and canopy height, and provides organizations with detailed insights into forest carbon dynamics.
We were thrilled to add a collection of datasets to support conservation organizations worldwide in their mission to protect biodiversity. The collection includes eight datasets, which you can read about in more detail in this announcement.
So what’s on deck for this year? You can expect to see even more datasets added to the Library, and a broader array of commercial imagery offerings. We’re also excited to enhance our existing features, such as Lookouts, to support more efficient passive monitoring. Above all we’re looking forward to continuing to support the work of incredible organizations around the world. From the entire Lens team, thank you for your continued partnership and support. Here’s to the new year!
