No matter where you are located in the world or what language you speak, we are on a mission to make our streamflow forecasts actionable and accessible for all.
We’re excited to announce that HydroForecast has launched in four new countries so far this year, further expanding our global presence and reinforcing our commitment to improving water resource management worldwide.
Japan: We’ve expanded into the Japanese hydropower market with a major Japanese energy utility. Entering the Japanese market is a significant commercial milestone, which is strengthened by support from the Japan Energy Fund, a key investor in Upstream Tech. Japan's hydropower sector comprises approximately 2,000 plants with a combined capacity of 50 GW. The nation's commitment to renewable energy, underscored by policies promoting hydropower development, makes it a pivotal market for innovative solutions like HydroForecast.
Norway: The importance of hydropower generation in Norway is undeniable–not only is hydropower the majority of the country’s electricity source, Norway is also Europe's largest producer of hydropower and one of the largest in the world. With HydroForecast now operating in Norway, we’re excited to help Norwegian hydropower operators continue to lead the clean energy transition. We are providing forecasts to hydropower plants to optimize their hydropower generation, decrease imbalance penalty fees, and increase net revenue.
Germany: We’re helping our first customer in Germany improve their short-term forecast insights. In partnership with a major German water utility and dam operator, HydroForecast has been deployed at more than 12 sites in Central Germany to optimize hydropower generation. Hydropower production has significantly increased in Germany in recent years, emphasizing the need for improved water resource management. HydroForecast is well positioned to scale this growth effectively.
Brazil: With around 80% of domestic electricity generation coming from hydropower in Brazil, optimizing water resource management is necessary for maintaining a reliable energy grid. However, Brazil faces many challenges in managing hydropower resources, from geographic constraints presented by water sources in remote locations to increasingly frequent and severe droughts. HydroForecast is now delivering actionable insights in Brazil to improve generation capacity and performance, as well as safety and emergency preparedness.
Other key markets continue to grow: We’ve also added more forecast points across the globe as we onboard new customers in some of our top markets, including in the US, Spain, Portugal, France, Iceland and Canada.
This global expansion is a clear sign of the market’s appetite for more advanced forecasting technology that goes beyond traditional methods and adapts to the changing climate. Each forecast we deliver is tailored to the site location’s unique geography, climate, and market needs to ensure accuracy and reliability.
We strongly believe in hydropower's potential to play a critical role in the energy transition and are excited to further contribute to worldwide renewable energy goals. Stay tuned as we share more about the results our forecasts drive to improve safety, operational efficiency, and grid reliability in these new countries.
