In the fight against biodiversity loss, understanding the outcomes of conservation actions is key. Recent research confirms this, highlighting that assessing the effectiveness of conservation initiatives is paramount to guiding future efforts. With billions invested annually in global conservation, knowing what works is more critical than ever.

The new paper “The positive impact of conservation action” published in Science underscores the importance of conservation actions and how they are needed to curb the loss of biodiversity. The study found that “in two-thirds of cases, conservation either improved the state of biodiversity or at least slowed declines.” The researchers specifically call out the benefits and effectiveness of interventions targeted at species and ecosystems, such as invasive species control, habitat loss reduction and restoration, protected areas, and sustainable management.
